Without keyword research, there would be no way of knowing what phrases to target within your niche and industry. Without keyword research, you are effectively walking blind.

So what is the exact reason for keyword research? Well, after an initial meeting with a client to establish goals and objectives for the inbound marketing campaign, keyword research is the very next stage of the process, and goes up to form the firm foundation on which the campaign is based.

The purpose of keyword research is to find out what are the most searched for and popular keywords in your niche, so you can target you site content and SEO to these key phrases, thus making a profitable website.

Having said that, another useful keyword research strategy is to run a PPC campaign for a few weeks to see what keywords people are clicking on. This can be very useful for getting another angle on the KT data.

One final thing to consider is this: in a typical SEO campaign you would select between 5 and 10 “key” terms, taken from the head of the Long Tail graph. These would be the ones that you would target in the SEO campaign (in the anchor text of links, for example), and would be the ones that feature on the home page and other major pages in your site. However, these main (head) phrases are not the whole picture; you have to consider the “long tail” of search, and the fact that most of your search engine traffic is going to come from the many phrases that you would never find in keyword research or SEO targeting. It is a vital part of inbound marketing to create regular content that will target this long tail, and extend your client’s reach on the internet.

Think about the page you see when you load your most-visited website. The header is one block, the navigation area another –  and the main text on the page a third. So search engines are starting to look at these blocks to more sensibly divide each web page into parcels of information.

An SEO company has a simple job – to keep your site doing everything search engines like, and to make sure it doesn’t do anything they don’t. Actually that’s not simple at all – because there are so many things search engines do and don’t like, and every month it seems more things change in their algorithms.
