I was perusing a forum the other day and someone wrote a really long post about how he is perplexed with the Google dance going on with his website in SERPS. He went on to describe in excruciating (and quite painful to any reader) detail how he is perplexed as to how his site keeps jumping 1 or two spots on an almost hourly basis, and yes he provided the forum members with a blow by blow of his day of checking minute by minute, and his frustration with these developments as his site was dropping a little bit at a time.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm….Can You Say SERP Addicts Anonymous?……………….Yeah!

About 1/4 of the way through I stopped reading of course, and I wondered if he realizes that if this is how he spends his day, then his SERP positions will just continue to drop because he is not focusing on nor doing anything to enable better SERP positions and checking them minute by minute will certainly not make that happen 8-O

Getting obsessed and addicted to these types of things can often happen and especially with newbies to the business. In  reality becoming fixated on those stats, as well as other aspects of Internet marketing and online business that people get caught up with, like checking commissions every 10 minutes is really self defeating. These are not productive activities as they only take valuable time from doing the array of important tasks for Internet marketing. There are regular fluctuations that occur naturally in SERPS and especially Google, and constantly checking these can be a source of great stress, which inevitably affect your work performance.

As an alternative spend some time…

Commenting on dofollow blogs, Gail from Growmap has a really useful resource to find some at Dofollow Blogs. How about some website promotion, link building, writing some good website content, networking for guest posts and article marketing.

You can also…

Work on boosting online conversion rates, commenting on some great blogs that have Comment Luv, testing ad placements, researching hot keywords for new or existing website pages, maybe you have been lacking in your search engine marketing efforts, or any number of other millions of tasks and duties that are on our plates, like social media marketing.

SERP analysis is important, don’t get me wrong, but there are limits, the Google dance is constant and it’s better to spend valuable time securing our positions rather than checking on them.

SERP analysis is important but they are the end all, in the grand scheme of things, falling some spots in Google will not crush you. The SERPS change all the time, and it’s much better to spend time focusing on the tasks that promote those SERP positions than obsessing over them and getting some good links that will ultimately aid those positions.

When you do need to check the SERPS, try this neat little checker, Instant SERP Rankings Checker that offers a simple interface for SERP analysis.

If you should find yourself checking the SERPS all the time, then please stop. Don’t let such distractions take over your online business and Internet marketing success!

What do you guys think?

Well looks like the last Google PR update of 2009 is taking place right now or may all ready be finished. Once again we get to stroke our egos, at least hopefully.

I have personally seen some weird things going on in the last 6 months with the updates, unexpected time frames with updates and mass fluctuations in PR.

This update several of my sites went up 1 level and several went back down to where they were in PR before the last update, which makes sense since the last update did not seem accurate at all.

Again, PR means nothing for rankings and it is just something we all have to check to make ourselves feel good, but if you lost PR or did not gain any at all then don’t worry about, be more concerned with SERP rankings.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to wish everyone a very happy new year and I hope that you are all ready to work hard and make some serious money online in 2010!!!!!!! I know I am :-) .

It’s been a great year for me and I am ready to make 2010 even better. Remember to be vigilant in setting goals for your online business and following through.

Don’t get too caught up in information to where it takes you off track and makes you stagnant, ACTION IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE!!!!!!!

See you all in 2010 and once again thank you so much for all the support and best of luck in all your 2010 endeavors!

christmas-night-magic-houseI want to wish all my readers very happy holidays and best wishes for a great New Year! I really appreciate all the support that you guys have shown to this blog and especially to my long time loyal readers.

This blog ranks really high in SERPS and get’s a lot of love from Google and a lot of that is because of you guys that make such valuable comments and show the SE’s that you enjoy the content provided via tons of traffic and dynamic participation.

In fact, this blog has now reached a milestone of 3,200 comments…yaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!

In case you have not noticed I finally redesigned the site and I think it looks a lot better than before. If you guys notice anything wrong or not working properly I would appreciate you letting me know, I checked several times, but you know never know what might have been missed.

I think that fresh designs are important for any blog for several reasons. You will find that you will outgrow your design at some point, you may need more features or a more complex design, and the main reason I think that when we first start our blogging we lack the experience to have foresight for features that we might need, or layout elements and as we get better and better at blogging we will always find something that requires a better or different design.

So don’t be afraid to try new designs and change things up a big once you’ve outgrown your current theme. Here is a simple and step-by-step guide where I detail how to painlessly change themes without affecting visitors and traffic at How To Change Blog Theme in the Background.

New Twitter Feature Added to My Blog Comments

I have added the Twitter Link Comments plugin to the comments, so you can add your Twitter username with a link to follow you on Twitter in your comments, enjoy!

Notice: Issue With Reply To Comment Feature

The regular comments are working fine, but the WP Thread Comments plugin that I was using for replies and nested comments is having problems with the new theme as the submit button is missing, so until I find a solution the reply feature will not be there, sorry about that. A total pain as I will have to try to figure out how to make it work or find an alternative. If any techies are reading please help!!!!!!!!!

If you wish to know if I, or another reader has replied to your comments, just select the Subscribe To Comments option and you will be notified via email, sorry for the inconvenience.

Stay Tuned for Great New Posts

Once again thanks for the support, best of luck and success to all your new year endeavors and happy holidays to you and your families!

So I’m up at 2Am writing some content for my niche sites, and here comes the infomercial and the opportunity of a lifetime…

Jeff Paul’s Shortcuts to Internet Millions

So what does Jeff promise?

…How bout $1,000,000,000 a week?

…Big cash flooding to your bank account immediately with his “secret Internet shortcuts” with only a couple of hours of work a week

…His system is full proof and the best part….

…He is committed to making me yet another millionaire like he did all those people on the commercial!

Plus…

Once I fork over a nominal fee of $39.95 to Jeff Paul, he will give me prebuilt websites that are ready to earn millions, as well as his Internet Shortcuts secrets and “I don’t have to do a thing”! (direct quote from Jeff)

WOW… So I pay Jeff, and he gives me instant prebuilt websites that will earn me at least $8,000 a week (like it is for all those people on the commercial), but more like $5,000 a day!

…Google won’t care that 2,000 other fools just bought Jeff’s great system, and will also be pushing the same mirror sites which are the exact definition of duplicate content, but that’s okay, because Jeff’s promises me that I can make thousands of dollars a week, instantly, with only a couple of hours of my time.

I don’t even have to learn Internet marketing, because Jeff’s system is totally automated and turn key, so all I have to do is pay Jeff for his “secret Internet shortcuts” system…and then start cashing in on the thousands of dollars that will just flood into my bank account.

And…

…Jeff’s promises that I don’t even have to know anything about the Internet or even how to use a computer! Joe on the commercial just testified that he is making $40,000 a month and he had never even logged onto the Internet before using Jeff’s Internet Shortcuts!

…and the best part? I will get rich while I sleep.

Jeff’s guarantees it so it must be so, right?

…And, Andrea, Bill and James all testified on Jeff’s commercial, that they went from bankruptcy to making $30,000 in their first week with Jeff’s Internet Shortcuts, then I can too!

…Jeff also promises that within a month of buying and using his Internet Shortcuts system I can be on a cruise, while money is flooding into my account.

…And all I have to do is pay Jeff $39.95

Only $39.95 for the secrets to making millions online instantly…what a great deal!

laughin smiley

laughin smileylaughin smileylaughin smileylaughin smileylaughin smiley

For all the newbies interested in Internet marketing and making money online let me tell you my Internet Shortcut Secret and you can send me half of what Jeff wants for his…

JEFF IS FULL OF SHIT!!!!

The reality of Making Money Online is….

…There are no shortcuts!

…You will not make even $1 in your first week, not even in the first month, and maybe not even in the first 6 months!

…It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, learning of correct skills and experience to make money online!

…Any cruise you take will be straight out of pocket and you will lose a week of valuable work time!

These are the cold hard facts Jeff!

I challenge Jeff Paul to show me one of his turnkey sites that makes him the 1,000,000,000 a week that he claims he makes, but, it can’t be the site where he shoves crap, like his “Internet Shortcuts” scam to desperate and naive people, and I will eat my shirt!

LMFAO!

Bing, the new search engine from Microsoft (formerly MSN Live) has signed a ten year deal to power all Yahoo searches. The buzz is that this is a power play to try to even or over power the search engine playing field, which, as we all know is dominated by Google. It is a fact that Google gets over 70% of all searches online.

search-engine-pie-chart

Data provided by Hitwise, February 2009

This merger will give Microsoft access to the Internet’s second-largest search engine audience and Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer stated in an interview,   “This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search.”

Yahoo estimates an overall 500 million dollars in revenue as a result of this merger, as they will keep 88% of the money generated from all ads that run alongside search requests for the first five years of the deal, and it will save them over 275 million dollars in expenses to run its own search technology.

Reportedly Google tried to stop this merger by offering Yahoo a search advertising deal, but that was stopped when some U.S. antitrust officials threatened to sue.

Microsoft has big hopes for Bing and has launched a big campaign to promote their new SE in print, radio, online and TV ads.

Bing returns good results and has a lot of promise, and as of late some would argue better than those of Google’s for many search queries, since Google’s weird SERP changes that have been going on since late May.

The Merger and Internet Marketing

As an Internet marketer I welcome a more even playing field in the search engine market, because the Google monopoly is a big thorn in our sides. We all worry so much about Google and they can literally make or break our online businesses with just some SERP changes.

It would be nice to even out the competition and get more even traffic numbers across the board. Many of my sites rank in Bing and Yahoo, and it’s a shame that so little traffic comes via those sources.

Time will tell, with Google being as dominant as they it will not be an easy feat! Plus the fact that this deal is not expected to close until early next year, and then it maybe be another two years before all the pieces of the partnership are in place with antitrust regulators needing time to review the merger’s effects on the Internet ad market and of course to stitch the technologies together.

What do you guys think?

Zac Johnson over at zacjohnson.com did a post on this topic and it really got me thinking so I went over and looked at the first website I ever built online…

LMAO… as the old saying: “You’ve Come A Long Way Baby” has never applied more.

I used Blogger for my first site and really I had no clue what I was doing. The SEO, both on-site and off is totally pathetic, I never even did any keyword research so the title and title tags are totally lame and untargeted…

The monetization was totally out of control because I had all this empty space in the sidebar so I filled it with banner after banner, like I am talking endless banners, don’t even get me started on the tags that I used as I had no clue what they were at the time.

My only traffic came from 3 people, 1 of which was my cousin who also clicked on some ad that paid 1 cent, so that was my 1st official online earning.

In reality that site taught me a lot and gave me the hands-on experience that allowed me to move forward, but it sure is funny to look at it now and it really gives me a great view of how far I have come in the world of Internet marketing and blogging.

So I’d like to hear from you guys about your first websites and/or blogs?

Did you get it right the first time?

Was that site inducted into the Amateur Hall of Fame like mine, lol?

There is so much malware out there that can downloaded to your computer without you even knowing it, referred to as “drive-by” malware that all you have to do is visit a website and if it is infected that virus will infect your PC as well.

I have been infected twice in the past by these  “drive-by” downloads and they had completely damaged my computers when Trojan viruses infected my PC, disabled my Internet browser and I had to have the entire operating system reinstalled, this also cost $100 since I no longer had the original OS disk and I lost all my data. This really sucks!

These days even the most trusted sites are getting infected with the latest iFrame Trojan, that infected, USA Today, ABC News, Target and Wal-Mart websites.

Today I went to a favorite website of mine that I visit often and they too were hacked by the iFrame Trojan and if it weren’t for my excellent virus software it would have infected my computer.

Now, I have used and tried every type of anti virus software you can imagine, Norton, McCaffee, AVG, PC Tools, even the free version of Kaspersky, but I gotta tell you, no one is better than Avast and I MEAN NO ONE and they are FREE!

By the way, I had Norton when those viruses ate my two computers, a total piece of crap!

In the last two days alone I have escaped being infected by serious viruses a total of 10 times, that is 10 viruses just in the last two days, all by just visiting websites. And all because of Avast Anti Virus and their excellent virus real time and drive-by protection.

As soon as I enter a website that is infected, Avast literally sounds alarm bells, with a voice warning me of the danger and then a screen comes up where I can choose to abort the connection to that website, or move the virus to quarantine. In short Avast automatically blocks any virus or malware from downloading onto my computer from bad websites.

Avast is the absolute best real time protection you can get, and their computer scans are accurate at detection and quarantine.

Avast is free for home users. They have a Pro version, but basically the only difference between the home and the Pro is that the dashboard interface is better in the Pro version.

But, the real time protection is the same for both and absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend them for a much safer web surfing experience.

Make sure that you download the Avast FREE home version because they do have a free trial for the Pro version that expires after 30 days and then they will ask you to upgrade. You have to register for the free version so that you get your activation key.

Data Backup

Another good resource for computer security is Mozy Online Data Backup, they give you 2GB of online data backup FREE!

This is another highly recommended service. You can set up whatever files you want to back up on your computer, daily, weekly or whatever you choose and Mozy will back them up and store them on their servers.

Online backup is a great way to secure your files and keep them safe and without having to use up tons of CD disks.

Believe me you do not want to be caught without having your files and data secure, especially if you have as much data on your computer as I have on mine. Visit Mozy and get 2GB Free, no strings attached.

Also make sure that you have WP-Database Backup plugin if you are running a wordpress blogs. It will email you a back of your database daily, weekly or whatever you select and if your blog is hacked the back up file can restore all your posts and content. Wordpress blogs are vulnerable to hacking, so better safe than sorry.

  • Over 10,000 backlinks and counting

I wish you the best for the New Year and a big toast to all our success for 2009!!!

New Google Page Rank Update

Well another PR update has taken place. I think Google has f**ked this one up, one of my sites went from PR0 to PR3, and it did not really deserve it, but I’ll take it! Another 2 sites were appropriately ranked from PR1 to PR2. This blog stayed a PR3, surprising considering the number of backlinks, but substantial amount were no-follow from the many blogs I comment on, but I will have to look into this further.

Internet Marketing Goals for 2009

As with any business, Internet marketing and online campaigns should have some kind of business plan and specific goals. I think this is especially important in Internet Marketing because we work alone and we need to maintain a high level of organization and focus that is so crucial for success.

With all the tedious daily tasks and hard work before us, such as, link building, writing content and articles, website design, promotion etc… it is easy to get caught up and lose site of the goals behind the work and neglect to pay attention to what is working what is not.  Don’t just work, work smart.

Earning Goal – If you want to make $1000 a month in 2009, then set that goal and then outline the ways you will get there. Be specific.

List the venues and campaigns you will utilize to reach your goal, such as websites and/or blogs. Write it down and make sub-outlines detailing what needs to be done for each one to reach your goals. You may have many niche ideas in mind, but make sure to evaluate each one and focus on those that will bring you to your goals.

Planning can make or break you in this business. You can only go so far just flying blindly. Making Money Online is not just crap shoot, having a solid Internet Marketing plan can take you a long way.

Internet Marketing Lessons

End of the year is a great time to plan for the future year by reflecting and analyzing what did and did not work in 2008. The biggest successes in Internet Marketing and affiliate marketing come from the failures and those trials and errors can be your best friends. So evaluate, analyze and re-analyze so that you do not waste more time in the future.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

What are your goals for 2009? What will you do differently in Internet Marketing for 2009? What were your PR results?

Some fool stole several of my posts and reprinted them on his blog. It started with one post and then daily I was noticing he was adding one after the other of my posts on his blog, a total copyright infringement.

The most comical part of this was the fact that his blog is called #1 SEO Consultant, HAH! What a crock!!!!! Any good SEO knows that scrapping content is a lame move, I guess he does not know enough about SEO to write his own guides so he scraps website content from others.

I sent him this email:

This is to advise you that you are using copyrighted and protected material on your website/blog. Your illegal use of the following posts on your site:

List of Stolen Posts URL’s on His Site

at his url is originally from my blog called JR’s Internet Marketing Strategies at http://getinternetmarketingstrategies.com. This is original content and I am the author and copyright holder.Use of copyright protected material without permission is illegal under copyright laws, and copyright infringement. Please remove the plagiarized material immediately. I expect a response within 3 days to this issue. Thank you for your immediate action on this matter.

He responded within 3 hours telling me all my content would be removed and he apologized for the inconvenience.

Content Scrappers, Splogs and Feed Theft

This unfortunately happens time and again. Losers that cannot write their own content will scrap yours and create what are called splogs, blogs full of scrapped content, as well as using it on their websites.

This thief was using a plugin developed by some other dick that actually lets you scrape feeds from other blogs and automatically insert them into your blog, feed theft is rampant on the net and considered copyright infringement. So if you publish a full feed then your whole post just gets injected into any scraper that uses this plug-in.

Some bloggers will republish excerpts of posts with a link back to the original source to continue reading the story and I am okay with this.  But to scrape the entire post and republish it can harm the original author’s site.

Two Schools of Thought on Content Theft

Some feel it’s fine as long as their links are retained within the content and they look at it as getting more backlinks. But, many do not feel that way, and there are harmful effects, especially in cases like mine, where there were several full feed posts stolen and it appeared as if he was the author.

Some Harmful Effects of Content Theft

  1. No matter how hard Google tries to credit the original source, the theft site can outrank you with your own content.
  2. It appears as if they are the author of the content and it can damage your reputation, especially with flagship blogs/sites.
  3. It PISSES you off!

Content theft on the Internet is copyright infringement and just as illegal as violating US copyright laws and we all need to be active in putting a stop to it, if we are passive about it, it only encourages more scrappers to continue stealing our stuff.

Basically how you allow your word to be used is upto you, but be sure to make it clear on your websites and blogs.

Protect your Sites and Blogs: Visible Copyright Notices

1. Website Copyright Protection:

  • Warn thieves and cover yourself by displaying the © Year -Site Nam e – All Rights Reserved notice on your website. Always place it at th e footer and you can also add it at the end of each your inner website pages that have original written content.
  • Creative Commons helps you publish your work online while letting others know exactly what they can and can’t do with your work. Choose a license and they provide you with tools and tutorials that let you add license information to your own site. Creative Commons License Options.

2. Wordpress Plugins for Copyright Displays

Display Copyright on the Blog
Display Copyright on the Feed
  • RSS signatureMy favorite! This one is cool, it adds a personalized message into the feed for copyright and anything else you may want to say and also you can put a link to your url as the original source. So when these thieves steal you feed content and put it on their splogs this message will also appear at the end of the content with the credit to you.
  • Angsuman’s Feed Copyright Plugin - Automatically add copyright message to feeds, fully configurable.
  • © Feed – Very detailed and highly configurable and has digital fingerprint options.
  • Simple Feed Copyright

How-To Monitor and Identify Theft

1. Blogs- Watch your trackbacks and Incoming Links. Another reason besides SEO to use internal links on your posts. If the thief left any of your internal links intact within the stolen post, Wordpress will send a trackback to your blog, you can find these in your Wordpress admin: in comments, on the dashboard – incoming links and often in your spam folder, via a plugin like Akismet Comment SPAM Fighter, which I hope all of you have.

2. Websites and Blogs – Use Google Alerts that will notify you whenever your links or your desired search terms show up on the web. Learn more at my post: Google Alerts a Must Have Tool

3. Websites and Blogs – Use Copyscape – Enter your url and they will scan the web to look for duplicates of your content. Free version is very limited.

4. Search the search engines – This is the hard way, but can work, just enter you web page title in the format: allintitle:”your title”

5. Wordpress Plugins to Identify and Prevent Content Theft

  • AntiLeech by Owen Winkler - This one is classic! It does not prevent the splogger bots from accessing your site, instead it produces a fake set of gibberish content especially for them that includes links back to your site and sends it only to them. Since these sploggers never read the content they steal it’s perfect. Has lots of options. Use the Website IP finder with this one.
  • Digital Fingerprint – Detect Content Theft. Injects “digital fingerprints” into your Wordpress post feeds then checks the web for evidence that your blog’s content may be illegally used.
  • © Feed – Very detailed and highly configurable and has digital fingerprint options.

When Content is Stolen and Copyright Infringement Occurs

Finding the Contact Info of the Thief

First look to these sources for website owners name and contact information on their site:

  • Contact
  • About
  • Footer notes
  • Email links in the source code, with “mailto”
  • Email forms

If none of above exist use these resources to find contact info.

Steps to Deal With Copyright Infringement

1. Send Email. Send a firm but polite email to the thief and demand to remove the stolen content and CC their host, like the email I sent above, you can copy it and just insert your information.

2. Contact Their Host. If they do not respond, contact their hosting provider directly and notify them of the copyright violation. Many hosts will close those accounts or work with you to resolve the issues.

3. Cease and Desist. The above usually does the trick, but if you still do not get a response you can start a Cease and Desist Order, that is more official and threatening.

Here are the best sources to learn more about Cease and Desist

4. Contact the Search Engines. This is the ultimate step and as per the Digital Millineum Copyright Act, compels search engines and online service providers to work for you to stop the copyright infringement and violation.

Contact Search Engines:

Here are some great bloggers in the Internet marketing and blogging arenas that offer useful and valuable content.

It seems that with some bloggers the more Internet Marketing “guru” they become, the less value they provide. In my opinion the main point of blogging is to provide value to your readers within your niche, whether it’s Internet marketing, MMO or purple dog leashes, content is the central focal point of blogs, so if there is no value a high subscriber count does not a great blog make.

I really don’t give a sh-t how many subscribers you got, what I am interested in is valuable content and I think that many new bloggers, those without thousands of readers offer a lot of value and should not be ignored, in fact it is the new bloggers that often try harder and deliver a lot more than their “guru” counterparts. What do you guys think?

Anyway, onto the bloggers that do it right…

Stephan Miller of Stephan Miller Blog offers extreme value on his Internet marketing blog and has been giving me lots of link love around the social sphere, thank you for that Stephan!

Like me, Stephan loves lists, make sure to check out one of the great lists he created on his Digital Products Review Site: How to Get Traffic to a Blog – 111 Ways to Promote Your Blog

Griz from Make Money for Beginners wrote two great posts about Adsense Optimization Tips for Adsense and I just Doubled My Income -Adsense Smart Pricing, both are very hands-on and useful posts.

Jason, The University Kid at Entrepreneur Blog is giving away a very good free e-book on flipping websites, that is really unique, get your free download here Make Money Dynamo.

Yan from Thou Shall Blog offers truly insightful and very comprehensive blogging tips and it is a pleasure to read his blog because there is always something new to learn and his interaction with his readers in comments is something to model. Make sure to read A-Z Blogging Guide for Beginners.

And, Peter Lee from Work From Home Business Blog, is fantastic at networking with other bloggers and webmasters for mutual success and interacting with his readers. The content is fresh, make sure to check out his post 200 + Passive Income Resources, Tips and Home Ideas. Oh and contact him and he’ll gladly exchange Technorati faves with you.

Tay from Super Blogging Tips provides a very cool strategy on link bait at: Want Traffic Call John Chow a Bad Blogger and don’t miss Decrease Your Posting Frequency, a sound and useful outlook for bloggers, that I completely agree with opposed to the fanatical daily posting strategy that some adhere to, what’s the prob with letting a post live a little? Tay also understands the value of link luv and spreads it around!

Oh and a little congrats to myself for making the 45n5 Top 100 MMO blogs from Digital Product Reporter, 45n5’s top 100 MMO blogs. By the way, this type of list is a great link bait and traffic generator, people really love those lists and they can be created for any niche/blog topic, you can check out how they do it at Create Your Own Top 100 List.
