How To Check Links on Websites and Blogs Automatically



Just a quick post today about how to check all the links on your websites and blogs and to detect any broken links. Xenu Link Sleuth is a great free tool that checks absolutely every link on your site, whether internal or outgoing.

Link checks are done on "normal" links, images, plug-ins, frames, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets.

Provides Full Report On

  • Broken links ordered by link and by page and the reason their broken (404, timeout)
  • List of redirected URLs
  • Broken page-local links
  • Orphan files

Also, provides simple dynamic interface with active hyperlinks to check the target, where the link is on your site, open link in Google cache, Alexa, Wayback machine and under properties shows the anchor and the exact link location on the site.


Main Purposes

  • To check who you're linking to - This is one is important as you can have problems with Google for linking to "bad" sites. Often as sites age and we add more and more content and links, it's good to check things out and make sure the old links are still good places to link to. This is especially useful if you are suddenly seeing a big drop in rankings, or suspect some kind of Google penalty.
  • To check for broken links both internal and outgoing
  • To make sure your affiliate links are correct
  • Do Follow Blogs - Easily check the url's in comments you're following
