Just a quick post today about how to check all the links on your websites and blogs and to detect any broken links. Xenu Link Sleuth is a great free tool that checks absolutely every link on your site, whether internal or outgoing.
Link checks are done on "normal" links, images, plug-ins, frames, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets.
Provides Full Report On
- Broken links ordered by link and by page and the reason their broken (404, timeout)
- List of redirected URLs
- Broken page-local links
- Orphan files
Also, provides simple dynamic interface with active hyperlinks to check the target, where the link is on your site, open link in Google cache, Alexa, Wayback machine and under properties shows the anchor and the exact link location on the site.
Main Purposes
- To check who you're linking to - This is one is important as you can have problems with Google for linking to "bad" sites. Often as sites age and we add more and more content and links, it's good to check things out and make sure the old links are still good places to link to. This is especially useful if you are suddenly seeing a big drop in rankings, or suspect some kind of Google penalty.
- To check for broken links both internal and outgoing
- To make sure your affiliate links are correct
- Do Follow Blogs - Easily check the url's in comments you're following
Basically Xenu Link Sleuth is a really great free tool to have around.

Sounds like it might have more features then the broken link checker plugin (ever used it?)

Yeah I use that one, and yes this one is much more comprehensive and many more features, and can be used for any site, static and blog.
Downloading it now. I think its a great tool since most link checkers are just basic ones. I think this tool is more comprehensive. Thanks for sharing.

Look interesting, but the webmaster tool for google is doing almost the same… But this software has more functionnality.

Iwebtool and backlinkchecker are also 2 great tools for doing this, haven’t use this Xenu tool until now though, might be better than those two mentioned.

I have been using Xenu Link Sleuth for the past several weeks and I have to agree that it is a great tool. You can really save a lot of time, since you don’t have to go manually through each and every link. Found several broken links in a matter of minutes and got them fixed. Thumbs up!

Its very important to have a tool for checking links on your site. Some sites are way too big to do it manually and this is the perfect tool for it. Too bad its only for blogs though.

What a great list! I do a lot of blog commenting, especially when I think the author has put a lot of time and thought into the post. This is a really helpful post that can give you some seriosu backlink juice as well. Thanks!

Good post, I have a problem with one of my site redirecting and it cause lots of my pages to show 4o4 and a few of my links are broken

Sounds like a decent plugin. The Broken Link Checker annoyed me when I used it; it didn’t distinguish 404′s and 301′s and it ran scripts all over my site that crossed out “broken” links.
Nice find. Will have to look into it. May be easier to use than Google Webmaster for this.

I’ve used a similar program to this but not entirely the same because it actually missed some of the links and I had to do it over manually. This seems a lot better. Man, these broken links and other URL problems can really cost us some damage when not fixed early and properly.
