That’s crazy! Don’t you just hate people crying over something repeatedly instead of just doing something that can prevent that from happening? He’s just wasting time trolling in forums and telling people how he’s falling from the top slowly. And from the looks of it, he’s had a good ranking before all this dropping started. What a waste of potential, his site could’ve stayed where it was before or even improved if he had just learned how to use his time better or used better methods.

I’m less annoying than that… I do real work, check SERPs, then go back to doing real work… rinse and repeat. The practice might annoy people which is why I’d never discuss it on a forum

…Especially since discussing it on a forum is neither checking the SERPs (which CAN be useful occasionally) or doing real work.

I love it

To be honest I almost stopped using Google Analytics. Clicky is great to know if one of your blog post gets digged or buzzes on Twitter. You can then tailor welcome messages to target those specific visitors – and see your blog subscribers stats go through the roof.

There is a free trial of the pro version ($50/year for 10 sites – which I cannot fault) so you can give it a go if you really want to.

Not a SERP Analytics addict, simply an Analytics addict since I installed Clicky and can view real time stats of what people are doing on my blog.

Hey JR,
Great post. Sorry I missed reading it before but I’ve been too busy monitoring my SERPS.
That said, obviously this guy Dick was missing the boat, but one does need to balance paddling with maintaining a steady course. So one needs to check serps every now and then to see how you’re doing and where you are going… but not ALL THE TIME.

I think I have been guilty of the crime you speak of in this post. Especially when I first started. I would waste an hour or two everyday checking SERPs that I could have been spending on building content and networking with other webmasters. I have to admit that even today I spend to much time farting around with the search engines.

I need to get more focused. I wonder if there are groups of people online who are trying to refocus their energy into productive activities. If there are I would love to know about them. Maybe we could set up partnerships where each of us makes sure the other stays on task by keeping each other accountable for a certain amount of production on a daily basis. There by either making us more productive or preventing us from fixiating on non productive activity.

Not sure about real time, I really dread analyzing traffic, so have not delved into it that deep, usually just check every couple of weeks to see general stats. Yes, SERPS do not change that often and sometimes even if they do, it’s a temporary adjustment, I would only be concerned with major drops in SERPS.

I’m constantly doing Google searches when I know, realistically, that Google’s results won’t change much from one hour to another.

I need to also stop checking Analytics every three hours. (BTW- is it real time or not? I thought I read something that said they shifted to a real-time model)

checking your site status its great but over doing it consumes more time than you think of instead of looking at your statistics you can emailed bloggers in your niche and built relationships ,or do anything to actively promote your site.

LOL, I know!!!!!!!!! It’s not exactly an addon, but needs to be added to Firefox, however, it runs in it’s own browser tab, like on their site, when you go to it and elect to run reports.
