Another Google toolbar page rank update has just completed. It’s funny that this follows so soon after Google made a special announcement on their blog advising webmasters to stop obsessing about PR and how they deemed it so unimportant that they removed the PR info from Google Webmaster Tools Dashboards.
Yet they have done another update and while we all know that PR has little to do with ranking, which is what ultimately matters most, it is still cool to check out these PR updates. Several of my newer sites went to PR3 which was nice, though not sure how deserved, but I’ll take it!
When I did some research as to how the toolbar PR increases compare with rankings I found no cause and affect, the sites still rank the same even when they jumped from PR1 to PR2.
So how did you guys do in the PR update? Anybody lose PR, this seems to be going around?

So they removed the PR from the Webmaster Tools Dashboards, announced that PR is not important and yet still did a PR update not too long ago? Talk about contradicting. Lol!

@John,
Lol, yes, very funny!
My main site has consistently stayed at a PR1, even through this last update (at its peak, it was a PR3). I had a brand new site go to PR3 though which is just ridiculous. I have heard from someone else that their PR went up and their ranking went down!

@Lisa,
Not a surprise, PR is not an indicator of ranking, many PR0 sites outrank PR3 + sites. Google Trust in sites is what makes rankings, not PR and often trusted sites that rank very high lose PR, like this blog, which used to be a PR3 is now a PR0, but still ranks high.
As far as your PR3 surprise, has happened to me several times and it was undeserved, sometimes it stuck and sometimes it was lowered in the next update, all in all it’s really insignificant.
@Lisa@Discount Newspaper Subscriptions,
I would rather have my ranking go up and my PR go down than the other way around.

During the last update, I saw a few of my sites jump up to PR3 with higher placement in the SERPs. Didn’t see much chance this time around despite adding quite a few new backlinks…

Seems this update comes with more postive effects as mmost of my sites improved expect for a blog that is still dancing between PR2 and 3.
Though the green toolbar does not hold a major value yet its always interesting seeing your sites improving each updates…

I don’t obsess about PR and ranking since I have so many other things to obsess about! But that being said, one site went down from PR 3 to PR 1 and the other stayed the same.

Yes this blog remains a PRO where before it was a PR3. I’m not worrie, still ranks better than before, and that’s all the matters.
General PR increase all around, although a couple of my sites lost PR, probably due to switching from www to non-www.

That will do it, I recently redirected an entire site and it tool one update for the PR to catch up.
And I always thought that PR is the most important thing for Google. Good to know that I was wrong… But surely this leaves me with a headache. What if Google will make up again something new that e.g. keywords are no longer important or meta tags are no longer visible?

Well this is something that is common place in this business and the only thing that is constant is the fact that something is always changing, unfortunately for us.
We just have to roll with the punches and never get too comfortable with anything. And, always diversify your online money making portfolio, never put your eggs in one basket.

I didn’t see any increase in PR, even though I’ve been building a lot of high PR backlinks over the past months. It doesn’t make sense to me, but I don’t pay too much attention to it anyway.

No change in the SERP, I think the “Caffeine” update (soon to be implemented) will have a bigger effect on rankings in the Search Engine.

I do too, especially for certain keywords. Caffeine seems to favor high end social sites and written content.
Contradiction? Yes they removed it from webmaster tools, and yes they said to stop fussing…they never said they were killing it, so here’s the latest update.
They also stated more then once and quite clearly to stop fussing over SEO so much and concentrate on excellent reader content; a direct quote would be, write for the reader not the search engines….should they stop chatting up proper SEO techniques?
OK as for me, DSWM went from 3-2, however considering no action on my part for several months, I’m just happy it didn’t go to 0. LOL

@marcus,
I have heard that PR3 to PR4 is a hurdle, I have never gotten a PR4, but again, all that matters is ranking in SERPS, so as long as you rank, who really cares?
my website also get page ranked 1 on one month
it is still cool to check out these PR updates. Several of my newer sites went to PR3 which was nice, though not sure how deserved, but I’ll take it!
Haha, they announced that you shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much and kind of removed telling us the PageRank, and then the toolbar PageRank update comes?
Now that’s funny.

Well, a few of my websites dropped from PR2 to PR1, others gained a sudden PR2 and PR1, which is very nice indeed
The funniest thing now is that it seems like Google is updating PR every 15-20 days. It used to take longer before.
I wish I could get a PR1 again
I really miss having PR… but I guess patience is the only virtue I can use for now, and backlinks.

Anyone else noticing a BIG Google dance going on right now? I’m experiencing a nice jump in the SERP’s on 3 different sites now. PR has remained the same on all sites, but SERP placement is up!

@Equipment Lease Calculator,
This is probably a result of the Caffeine Update they are working on, I do not believe it has been finalized yet.
That will do it, I recently redirected an entire site and it tool one update for the PR to catch up.
I dropped a PR point with the last update, but I think it was because of too many outgoing links and the lack of updates. I’m trying to be more active now, so my PR can either go up or stay the same
Hopefully.
Anyway, I think that is kind of a contradiction. If they mean to remove PR at all, they should remove it from everything, toolbar included.
@Primus,
Can you give a little info about “too many outgoing links” – outgoing links are awesome unless of course you’re linking to no no sites.
Dennis Edell´s last blog ..IS An Advertising Page Really A Good Idea? An Interesting Opposing View…
@Dennis Edell, sorry, I think I didn’t explain myself too well. I’ve been learning through SEO websites that having more than 100-150 links on a single webpage would look suspicious in search engines’ eyes and seem more like a link farm than a normal page. That’s why I re-structured my links and organized them on more pages, so that they don’t overload a single page of my site or the homepage.
@Primus,
Oh that, you’re right. Google did say something about 100 max is preferred. I think it was just for the homepage though…including all the sidebar links.

I never cared about PR. No updates in PR for me.
i have noticed that many pages on my site have gained pr. some were pr 0 and now i see they get PR. THANKS GOOGLE,
Yes, Its really great news. One of my website PR got updated from PR 0 to PR 3. Which is quite good. Any one knows when the next PR updation happend?
Thanks for sharing, this is so interesting. We have noticed a PR change with our site but we have with a colleagues site and it went down from PR2 to PR1. But these things happen and it’ll change again soon so we don’t hold too much by it.
I agree with you that too many people put too much emphasis on PageRank and not on the quality of a website. I have one site which is PR0 but yet I rank quite well for my targeted keywords. Funny enough, it used to be a PR3 but dropped to a PR0 with the latest update. Not sure why but I get more traffic now than ever. Go figure.
I guess we fared well in the update as I did not notice a change in our pr. PR isn’t what it used to be, as Google seems to place much less emphasis on links these days.

Glad I saw the link to this post from Dennis’ site. I don’t know what my PR was before as I didn’t start checking it until after Google made their change. I’m at PR3. I’ve noticed I’ve been higher in SERP and have had more traffic as a direct result of having my posts tweeted & RT’d on Twitter. Particularly RetweetMeme seems to have an overall good impact on SERP (though not sure how as I haven’t researched it).
That being said I’d almost prefer to have some of my posts RT’d that way vs. through other available methods.
One thing I noticed recently was that although reportedly we don’t get backlinks from Mixx and Digg I saw a number of both on my site through Google Webmaster tools. So that leads me to the desire to find out if what I read/heard before is indeed true or not.
Any idea?

@Michelle Mangen,
You definitely get links from both Digg and Mixx. Digg recently implemented all links to no follow, unless you’re story goes popular (then you get a do follow), and Mixx has always been no follow.
However, these are valuable links and have a lot of authority in Google’s eyes, always go for them. If you have a new site, getting a Mixx link to it causes super fast indexing as Google crawls their site a lot. Also, when your site is new and not ranking in SERPS, these links can get you some traffic.
Overall social bookmark links do not hold the biggest link juice, however, they are an important part of an overall link building strategy, and if your story goes big on Digg, then you get the do follow. A good idea is to Mixx and Digg any articles that you have written for article marketing as well.

Lol, thanks. Yes it is easy to not think of those things, it’s always good to link to your promotional material that links back to your site. The links back to your sites within those articles or other promotional material will lead the SE’s back to your site to crawl it, which is always good
And I always thought that PR is the most important thing for Google.
