There is a great report compiled from some very comprehensive data over at SEOMoz, that highlights the most important factors in ranking high in the SERPS.
The 2009 report, is a compilation of data from over 72 successful SEO's. While there were not too many surprises, it's definitely worth a look, check it out at: SEOMoz 2009 Ranking Factors.
The Top 5 ranking factors that are listed are pretty much in line with what most of us know, and of course #1 SERP ranking factor is still Keyword Anchor backlinks to the site.
#3 on the list is diversity of link source, which we sometimes over look and should be a focus since links from a variety of domains, IP's and sources is important and will count much more for ranking. They also list the 5 top negative ranking factors, most of which are black hat strategies. Overall, it's really a great read.
Also, make sure to check out their Link Building guidelines which is mentioned in the post, lots of great information there where they breakdown the effectiveness of link building from a variety of sources and methods, as well as, factors affecting the values of external backlinks. Great stuff, check it out!
Overall SEO Moz, provides some solid SEO info on their blog, so subscribe to their updates.
I love this report, I read it when it came out last week and it’s very valuable. Believe it or not, SEOMoz has some pretty awesome gems in their blog posts. One of the very best for anybody interested in SEO to read up on.

Very good report. There are a lot of little things that we overlook that can help you increase your search engine rankings.
SEOMoz was already in my daily hit list… And glad to know that backlinks and anchor text still play a role. .edu, .gov links (even low PR links) still would be another major offsite SEO factor I would think.

Backlinks is the best way to improve the rankings of your site. Directory submissions will usually give you a good boot. I find the best way to get results is to build high PR links with any link text (general trust) and any links with your link text (keyword trust). A good way to get a lot of quality links is to get a good design for your site and submit it to the 100s of high PR directories and also in dofollow blogs . That combined with a bit of gutter links trawling should give you a good SERP ranking position.
I always think why my site is not getting on Top. even I have lot of back links. As being web designer, We have hundreds of Websites designed and they all backlink us.

I read this report. It’s a great one but it pissed me off slightly. I had some debate recently and this report kinda trashed some of my claims. Damn it I hate when I have to admit I was wrong

The conclusion of this report is that the backlinks are most important in SERP of any website. The quality of backlinks is more important than having bunch of non-relevant backlinks.

I have a different way to see Black Hat SEO Techniques. I cannot really believe 100% that you can get totally out of Google just because Black Hat SEO Techniques. What I believe is that you overuse Black Hack SEO Techniques, you can get sandboxed at most but I have tested some Black Hat Techniques and some of them are really helpful for Long and Short Term.
