There is so much malware out there that can downloaded to your computer without you even knowing it, referred to as “drive-by” malware that all you have to do is visit a website and if it is infected that virus will infect your PC as well.
I have been infected twice in the past by these “drive-by” downloads and they had completely damaged my computers when Trojan viruses infected my PC, disabled my Internet browser and I had to have the entire operating system reinstalled, this also cost $100 since I no longer had the original OS disk and I lost all my data. This really sucks!
These days even the most trusted sites are getting infected with the latest iFrame Trojan, that infected, USA Today, ABC News, Target and Wal-Mart websites.
Today I went to a favorite website of mine that I visit often and they too were hacked by the iFrame Trojan and if it weren’t for my excellent virus software it would have infected my computer.
Now, I have used and tried every type of anti virus software you can imagine, Norton, McCaffee, AVG, PC Tools, even the free version of Kaspersky, but I gotta tell you, no one is better than Avast and I MEAN NO ONE and they are FREE!
By the way, I had Norton when those viruses ate my two computers, a total piece of crap!
In the last two days alone I have escaped being infected by serious viruses a total of 10 times, that is 10 viruses just in the last two days, all by just visiting websites. And all because of Avast Anti Virus and their excellent virus real time and drive-by protection.
As soon as I enter a website that is infected, Avast literally sounds alarm bells, with a voice warning me of the danger and then a screen comes up where I can choose to abort the connection to that website, or move the virus to quarantine. In short Avast automatically blocks any virus or malware from downloading onto my computer from bad websites.
Avast is the absolute best real time protection you can get, and their computer scans are accurate at detection and quarantine.
Avast is free for home users. They have a Pro version, but basically the only difference between the home and the Pro is that the dashboard interface is better in the Pro version.
But, the real time protection is the same for both and absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend them for a much safer web surfing experience.
Make sure that you download the Avast FREE home version because they do have a free trial for the Pro version that expires after 30 days and then they will ask you to upgrade. You have to register for the free version so that you get your activation key.

I had a similar experience not so long ago. Went to an infected site and my browser was hijacked. Extremely annoying.
I have now got Kaspersky, which seems very good. I wouldn’t recommend AVG though. No help at all!

Avast is much better, I used AVG as well, but their real time protection is not as good as Avast, at least not in my experience.

Thanks a lot! I’ve been a victim of viruses and they are NOT fun. The last one totally did in our PC…we got a Mac to replace it because we heard that they didn’t get viruses. But you never know what could develop down the road! (There’s a special place in hell for hackers, imho). I still have a Windows laptop, so I think I’ll take Avast up on their free offer. Thanks again for letting us know about it.

Definitely put Avast on your laptop, it is amazing!
Thanks for the great resource JR. I was wondering can the Iframe virus infect your computer without you clicking any buttons on the website?

I believe it can, it can download automatically like other “drive-by” viruses, and often they do it in the background so you don’t even know you are being infected, that is what the iFrame started to do before the Avast blocked it, and many others as well.
Norton Anti-Virus is completely useless against Trojan Vundo viruses…….we have lost IE and FF browsers to vundos…….ONLY GOOGLE CHROME is immune to these viruses! No problems with vundos since I started using Chrome….

Yeah, Norton is useless period! Before I had Avast, Norton ran “clean” scans for weeks, once I got Avast it detected 3 Trojans and 2 other malware on my computer.
Thanks for the review. Learned something in protecting your computer from malwares.
Thanks for the info. Yeah I agree, Avast is a great anti-virus but for data backups, I would suggest SafeCopybackup, www.safecopybackup.com. You can backup USB drives, share files and backup both my Mac and PC with one account. I’m very happy with it and it may be worth checking out.
I vouch for Avast. Ever since I used Avast antivirus, I never had any virus or malware attack anymore. I am only using the free home use edition and I am so satisfied.
Hi Jr,
I agree 100%! I love Avast! After using many different programs and still getting viruses a friend told me about them. I have been using it for 5 months now and have yet to get any malware or viruses!

I actually have to agree with you. While I did have AVG for a while (until they made you pay), and I thought it did a great job, I now use Avast. I’ve never had a problem with Avast and have yet to get a virus or any malware for that matter. I never ever liked Norton, and it always slowed down my computer. It’s total crap if you ask me. I highly recommend Avast as well. It wouldn’t hurt to also have a third-party firewall installed for extra security. You can never be too safe. I recommend Zone Alarm or use Spybot Search and Destroy’s built in resident guard with real-time protection.
Backup is crucial in case something bad happens as in your case. I’m in the process of getting a 1TB external drive to backup my two internal drives. I’d hate to lose all of my information, pictures, etc.

@Work From Home Ideas,
I hate Norton as well, and you are right about them using too much system resources and causing drags.
All of us have such problems. And I can tell You such story…
I have two comps: desktop and laptop.
One of them has Kaspersky and the second has Norton. I used these programs for a long period. And I have no problems at all…
All these programs have good firewall protection and good scan. So, it’s my opinion.
Gonna go download avast right now. I’ve been using AVG, but not sure how secure it is as a mostly free software program.
I also use Avast, and I am very satisfied. They have a paid version, but I don’t see why I should get it since the free version works very well.

Thanks for this, will probably be a life saver for so many people. I’ve been infected with trojans in the past, they are a nightmare to get rid off
hey JR,
I’ve been using AVG (free) for years, but based on your post and the comments above, I may switch. I think I’ve got a bug right now that I’m trying to find, and I definately got the Vundo bug a few months ago (slipped by AVG). I now also use Malwarebytes, which is what cleaned up Vundo.
So I will have to check out your Avast. I am assuming I would need to uninstall AVG before installing Avast?
Have you seen any side by side comparisons between the two?

Steve,
I have not seen side-by-sides but I used both, AVG missed several Trojans that Avast found and cleaned up and Avast has much better real time protection, with live alarms, alerts and virus download blocks.
Go to Avast first and download the download file. Then close the Internet and your browsers. Then uninstall AVG, then install the new Avast. It will then perform some back ups and other stuff and be ready to roll.
I seem to get a virus every other day. I have had viruses as bad as the one you described ( that destroy the entire windows install ). But usually they are just trojan viruses that display ads and make my computer run slow. No virus program I know of can block you from getting these viruses. I currently have AVG installed and it is pretty good at detecting them but most of the time is unable to get ride of them, Huh? I use Malewarebytes and it is great to get ride of them, and they update very often, and best of all its free. I have not tried Avast, but after what you said I plan too. Does Avast block viruses from installing when you go to websites? On another note, why does windows allow, without a users permission, to install ANYTHING from a website? Seems like it wouldn’t be that hard to lock files in windows32 from being changed.

I agree, Norton is useless. Thanks for the post.

Yes Avast blocks downloads when visiting bad sites and alarms and full on alerts go off when visiting bad sites and infected sites, the full fanfare.
Windows is known for having security issues such as allowing infections and downloads and especially Internet Explorer browser, that has all those direct-X vulnerabilities, that is why I only use Firefox, it is much more secure than IE.
I was using Avast for a long time, but I found something better : it’s Avira Antivirus and it’s also free, and the only antivrus software better than Avast in my opinion. Ii is not surprising that this software won the first place on many recent antiviruses tests…
Have you tried it ?
It’s so good that I finally bought the Premium version (quite cheap for an antivirus/antispyware/firewall package)…
I’m using AVG, seems cool to protect my pc from virus. JR how do you think about JR?

Yeah I used to think that too, but Norton is crap, lost a whole computer using them.
The best antivirus to me is kasperky. I had a virus on my pc and avast could not do anything. Kasperky did a better job than avast. From your review, I would conclude that some anti virus softwares are better in remove some virus than others.

Yes I think that will always be the case, I know Kaspersky is a good product, but pretty expensive.

Will check it out, thanks! Malwarebytes is great I use it as well.
After using many antivirus I can say that Avira Antivirus is best from my point of view.
Well its a frequent problem for all PC’s. My PC is also often face this problem and for contest this problem i was searching some new and latest anti virus software in the market. Thanks for it.
How we can put two anti virus in one PC? Can any body tell me about it.
I am using Avira, I think why don’t try another one but when I start installing it. It create problem. Pls help.

@Surfers paradise, You must first uninstall your current antirvirus program before attempting to install the new one. I’m not sure why but it creates a lot of problems if you try to run two at the same time, and most installations won’t succeed.
Maybe someone here has a solution, but from my experience it can’t happen.

I have decided to take the risk of maybe changing the subject of the thread by posting here…. but I did feel that there is a strongly related component that came to mind for me…
Is this admonition true for spyware programs as well? Is there any harm in running more than 1 on the same computer as I am doing now?
My apologies for not contributing to the primary thread topic. I have learned to uninstall a virus program before installing another.
Perhaps this little helpful freeware tool will be of interest though:
I use something called Smart Close 1.1 which allows the shutdown of programs easily to use before intalling new programs which is recommended by most install programs.
It takes a snapshot of the computers open programs first, closes them down- then you do the install- return to Smart Close for the Restore function and Oila! Back to the pre-install status except the newly installed program is now resident on the computer.
For good measure, I usually Restart my computer at that point- but that is a personal decision for you.
I find that Smart Close tool very convenient whenever I want to run just 1 program and close others down and restore when I am ready to very easily.

@lawed, Hi lawed, as far as running multiple spyware programs at a time, there’s no harm in it. I run several different programs at once on my computer. Each one is beneficial in their own way, and one may find something that the other won’t. I actually recommend having several instead of using just one. It could be leaving stuff on your computer that you don’t want on there.

hey JR,
My firefox browser started bogging down big time about a month ago. I have AVG and ran a scan, but it found nothing. Based on your post and others, I finally uninstalled AVG and installed Avast. Avast found a dozen viruses that AVG (and Malwarebytes) had missed, including the problem one. You are right. Avast is better! Thanks for the recommendation.
