March 2009 Google Page Rank Update Underway

Looks like Google has done another toolbar Page Rank update, so check your sites.

This blog remains a PR3, I honestly have not done much with link building in the last three months as it all ready ranks on Page of 1.

A few of my other sites went from PR0 to PR2 and PR1 to PR2. A couple of others went from PRo to PR1, a nice surprise since they are very new and I was not expecting a Page Rank increase this time around. Just goes to show what backlinks can do!

Little PR Test

A little test I did between two site shows the power of article marketing. With one new site, Site A, I built links with the usual techniques of reciprocals, social sites, some one-ways, directories, do-follow blog comments and articles. Site B got the same links as Site A, except without articles. Both sites are about a month old. Site A went from PR0 to PR1 and Site B stayed a PR0.

Once again, this proves the value of article marketing to link building, and if you can swing it, I strongly recommend using Article Marketer submission service, they are still the best deal around with the most article sites submitted to and overall the lowest price as compared to other article services and what they provide. Makes article submission much easier and the results speak for themselves.

Remember that internal pages of your sites and blogs get PR updates as well, so check those too.

3 Ways to Check Inner Page PR

1. You can check each one manually, this is a pain!

2. Google your site with these search terms: site: http://yourdomain.com with the SEOQuake toolbar activated to see all your pages displayed and SEO Quake showing the PR under each listing.

3. CleverStat has a free tool, ParaMeter, that checks your inner page PR.

If you are new to link building, there are plenty of backlink building resources and guides on this blog, browse the Categories: Link Building, Search Engine Optimization and Lists.

Again, while the PR update is exciting and we all wait to see how we did, it is NOT the end all. In reality it’s all about SERP positions and many times lower PR sites will outrank higher PR sites, it’s really about the numbers and quality of backlinks.

It’s my understanding that the new algorithms are discounting the value of do follow comments and increasing the value of incoming links from high PR sites… which means article marketing is probably the BEST way to increase your PR.

Since I haven’t been doing article marketing – I’m not even going to check!

I had a really new site last go round that was given a PR4. I really couldn’t understand why but this time it got knocked down to a 1 which makes more sense. It was fun while it lasted. My PR3 stayed the same but several others went from 0 to 1.
Gotta run and build more backlinks.

I’ve been getting conflicting reports on my site: some PR checkers say “4″ and some are saying “3″…….I’d be surprised to see a drop because my links have gone from 4,800 to over 7,000 during the last 3 months. Hopefully this is just a data server glitch: Google Directory still shows a PR 4 and that is the final authority!

Article marketer id decent for article submissions but I have dropped them and went with unique article wizard instead, they distribute to more directories, better support, plus your articles are unique. The only down thing is that is a bit more expensive at 67 a month. Well worth it though if you can write an article a day or so.

My blog went from 3 down to a 2. This surprised me as my traffic has gone up considerably and my links have gone up a bit since the last update.

I wondered if that could be the case. From Google’s perspective it doesn’t make sense to give a lot of importance to comment links. Most of my link building is simply commenting.

For article marketing do you simply reuse some of your best posts or do you write unique articles to avoid duplicate content issue?

All of this emphasizes the most important thing: As long as you’re on the TOP OF SERP, the Page Rank score is irrelevant! One of my competitors has a PR of “0″ yet he’s always challenging my site for the top Non-Sponsored Search Result in Google!

@JR: It’s not just about PR and backlinks. Google is PR10 but they can’t rank for ‘Internet marketing strategies’ because anchor text and surrounding text for their backlinks are not related to this. People fail to understand this when they are just comparing results for different PR websites.

Which is why I wonder why we concern ourselves with PR at all. If you are dominating the search engines for a bunch of keywords, who cares if PR is 1 or 4?

  True as to not worry about it too much on your own sites as rank is more important, but PR is still necessary for getting quality backlinks so it does have its uses from external sites and having a higher PR makes for more link building opportunities.

I here you JR. I suppose for people who are intersted in brokering links or selling their website then PR is of some relivance. But as you said, good position in the SERPs is what we as internet marketers need to focus on
