There is no denying that the United States and many parts of the world are having major financial difficulties. The recession is affecting retail
sales across the country, and Internet marketing and the online marketplace will surely feel the effects as well. Some affiliate marketers are seeing significant decreases in sales, and while so far most of my sites are staying steady, some have seen a decline in sales.
This does not mean that this business is over, in fact, I truly believe that the Internet marketplace will become even more significant in these hard financial times because:
1. Its unique ability to provide below retail prices and major savings on products, just look at sites like eBay, Amazon and Overstock.
2. People seeking information on how to get through tough times and make extra or full time income while unemployed.
As always, the key to online success is to look for trends and the opportunities to exploit them and in hard times like these, the opportunities will focus around consumables and information.
Consumables:
Clothes
Pet supplies
Household items
Coupons
Baby items
Toys
Cheap home entertainment
Deal sites
Cheap anything sites
Health
Weight Loss
Free anything
…thousands more.
Valuable Information:
Making money
Work at home opportunities
Jobs and work
Schools and training for new careers
Career guides
Recession news
Saving money
Budgeting
How-to get cheap anything
Decreasing utility bills
Saving on car insurance
Health Care issues
Free anything
…and lots more.
Some of those make money, work at home niches and money blog sites are pretty competitive, but there are still long tail keywords that are viable and you can build a great website and make money. As always, make sure to research keywords for any subject matter you want to get into.
One of the most solid money making venues is still Google Adsense, and in hard financial times, Adsense is on top of the list, because you don’t need to make a sale, you get paid for the click, so information sites sprinkled with Adsense is a sure winner anytime and especially now!
Another solid money making opportunity is flipping websites, still one of the best ways to make money online with a wide open marketplace, here is the best how-to guide for doing this from Jason Pereira, a very successful blogger and website flipper at Flip Noobs.

Hey Jr,
I agree the internet is really just now becoming a sales vehicle. I think the real value of it is the web can take the spread out of the price of items. If you have a widget you bought for $10 and I don’t know anybody else with that widget you can charge me $100 and there is nothing I can do. But with the web I can do a quick search and find people who are willing to sell the same widget for $11 to $99 (and maybe even $7 to get my email address). I no longer have to pay your $100 price.
It is all about the information I have when making a purchase and information is the end all of the web. “We ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”
Question: Do your Connectlinks count as internal links since this address shows up in the address bar at the bottom of the browser when I hover?
Thanks

@Andy
I am not sure what you mean by Connect links?
@JR, Sorry I misspelled it. I meant the contentlinks in the post. I was just wondering if you got a juice from them.
Thanks for the reply.

@Andy
Within content links from external sites back to yours are some of the best juice links there are, when looking for link exchanges those and home page links are the ones to shoot for. The content links to my internal pages also help to give the SE’s relevance to your sites inner pages for relevant KW, and provide a nice deep webpage, which G likes a lot.
Even static web sites will do well in the recession. Old forms of advertising are obsolete— my business has doubled since I reached top of SERP in my niche (Sacramento weddings).
@Matt
Congrats on that, gotta love those top SERPS!
@Matt@Sacramento Weddings, Definitely dude, SE traffic are the best and most targeted.

First, it’s not a recession, it is indeed a depression. Too many in power too chicken to say the word.
You are so right though. About a week or two ago I’m watching the news, and its another night of this company and that company down X%….
Amazon.com up 14% – says it all right there, don’t it?

Of course, I think anybody who shops retail today, recession or not is wasting serious bucks!
Interestingly, despite the recession, online sales in the UK are actually up on last year. It seems that more and more people are going online to find a bargain so, as you mentioned, any sites that helps people get a good deal will do well!

People are now really into making money online. They are now using this as an additional income generating source. And that is why I do agree with your post ( I can’t say its a prediction because it is really happening now!).

having an alternate source of income is always good.
I’ve started making money online, however the growth seems to have tapered off.
@Kawasaki motorcycles,
As a good source, yes it was, indeed!
But in terms of site sells (e.g. online shopping) it really goes down.

Now is the ideal time to ramp up your online efforts because the economic challenges are scaring many into pulling back. One reason recessions and depressions worsen is that when sales decline many sellers cut back on or even stop advertising. They cut costs by laying off their SEO, PPC and blogging staffs.
If YOU increase your efforts while they’re cutting back they’ll hurt their own sales and you can pick up the slack.

So true, and I am also noticing that IM products and tool prices are being slashed all over the place so now is the time to buy those things that you maybe could not afford before.
Selling clothes online used to be a really profitable niche. Not sure if its still hot now..

I don’t know about clothes but I do know that every blogger could probably be selling magazines related to their niche. They usually have affiliate programs that pay 30+% and are an easy sell.
I have a couple of posts on making money with affiliate programs and am planning more. I linked them both to this comment so you can easily find them.

Have you seen that survey that Merchant Circle did? It is mentioned and linked in the first paragraph of the post shown in the CommentLuv link.
When 1100 small businesses respond and 73.1% of them report revenue is moderately or severely down that really is a wake-up call. We all need to be really proactive and work smarter. We are nowhere near the bottom of this yet.

@InternetStrategist@GrowMap, I wouldn’t place much stock in anything compiled by Merchant Circle….. Those 1100 small businesses who answered their survey — most probably don’t have a web site of their own……I know this because I’ve helped several small businesses set up their MC page, despite not having a web site. Since IAC and CitySearch bought Merchant Circle last year, they severely crimped MC’s search engine presence on Google. Now, those businesses are seeing less traffic at their MC page. Hence, the survey results!
Locally in California, I have been steering everyone to Yelp(dot)com…its a great source of useful information about local businesses…..and the site is spreading to other states and countries rapidly!
Very intresting and informative! i think also that that Internet marketplace will grow and become even more worthwhile in these hard times. im just starting out in internet marketing and am really excited about it!
