One thing is certain, with Internet Marketing something is always changing and the Google SERPS are unpredictable. It is important to stay on top of changes and roll with the punches.
Some of you may have heard of recent issues that thousands of affiliates have had with BANS (Build A Niche Store) sites and similar affiliate marketing websites getting de-indexed completely or massively losing SERP position. There was speculation that lack of original written content was the main reason for this. And for many I know this was true. Time and again Internet marketers do not understand the value of original website content in affiliate marketing.
Many affiliates literally just slap up affiliate sites, whether it’s BANS or Amazon, or other such sites with nothing but affiliate link pages and without any original content. As I have said before in The Importance of Quality Content, this is a really bad strategy and will kill your chances of ranking in the Google SERPS, if you even get indexed at all.
I too was hit with this issue on two BANS sites and it was important for me to correct these issues quickly as my BANS sites make money regularly and the best traffic comes from the search engines, especially Google.
These two sites rose steadily in the SERPS when first launched with regular link building and on-site SEO. A while ago, the two sites began dipping in and out of their high SERP positions on a regular basis, one day they were there, then they were gone. Then suddenly a few weeks ago the home pages were de-indexed all together and only some content pages showed up in SERPS for their keywords, an Internet marketing nightmare! So, I began to do some experimenting, which is your best friend in Internet marketing.
SERP Experiment
First, I added more content, though I knew this probably had nothing to do with the content since both sites have more content pages than auction/affiliate link pages and I add content on a regular basis, but I wanted to eliminate all possible factors.
Second, I built up more links via article marketing, some new forum postings and do-follow blog comments, to see if that would resolve the issues. Neither of those tests did anything to get my sites back in the SERPS.
I then I decided to do a test with the home page.
1. I removed the eBay auction listings (affiliate links) that I had listed below the welcome messages on the sites.
2. I added 2 more paragraphs of wording to the welcome message and a related image with the keywords in the alt tags and some internal links to relevant pages for the keywords that came up within the content of the welcome message.
Experiment Results – Exactly 4 days later:
Site #1 home page appeared on page 1 of SERPS without quotes and has been there for over 2 weeks, holding steady.
Site #2 home page appeared on page 2 of SERPS (higher than it was originally) without quotes and has been there for 2 weeks as well (Page 2 is not surprising since there are some big guns on page 1 that I am currently working to out rank).
Since I had eliminated all other factors the lesson here is obvious, affiliate links on the home page affect SERP position for affiliate sites.
While I have heard this before, it never had affected me until recently and so Google is obviously hitting hard not only on affiliate sites with little or no content but also on those sites that have affiliate links on the home page.
This just proves how important experimentation in Internet marketing really is. While many panic and follow hype instead of using common sense, checking results and testing.
A great example of this is the widespread and ongoing inaccurate hype about duplicate content and how it still manages to be a leading and misleading focus on many forum threads because people just do not check things out for themselves and therefore limit their success online.
About BANS
Contrary to what some haters in the Internet marketing world may say, BANS (Build a Niche Store) is not at fault, in fact, BANS is regularly making lots of money for many affiliates who optimize their sites correctly and bring in regular search engine traffic and now thanks to this experiment I am back on that track.
BANS is really great, because it is cheap and allows anyone without any coding knowledge to build unlimited numbers of great money making websites centered around the eBay affiliate program, as well as any affiliate programs of their choice. One of the best things about eBAy is they have over 10,000 products and so the possibilities and keywords are endless.
Many of the BANS bashers never take the time to actually do the work required for success, instead they think they can use the software to quickly put up some sites that are nothing but mirrors of eBay and start raking in big bucks overnight. Sorry, nothing is that easy in Internet marketing and making money online takes more effort than just buying software.
I highly recommend BANS and you can see my full review with screenshots at: Review of Build a Niche Store or Check out the BANS official Website.

I’ll vouch for the fact that ebay has more than 10,000 products – probably that many categories, but I know what you mean!!
Excellent write up and good results on how the BANS affected your search ranking!!

Hi JR
Thank you for the great insight.
I was wondering how having affiliate links on a blog is viewed in Google’s eyes. Are websites and blogs completely different animals?
How often do you think you will have to add original content to your site and does it have to be on the home page to have the affect you desire from Google?
Thanks for all the help.

@Andy@onlinechristianbusinessopportunity,
I do not think blogs get any special treatment in regards to having a lot of affiliate links on the home page. Some original content is important to have on the home page, such as a welcome message with your keywords. Also on the home page you will have the navigation to link to other content pages within your site and that is good.
How often is hard to answer, I usually add a page at least twice a month to my niche sites and when I launch I have at least 6 pages all ready there.
The blog is easy since the regularly added posts are the content. As you can see on this blog’s home page I have excerpts of my latest posts, this is usually the best option for blogs.
@JR,
Thanks for the quick reply,
When you add new content is it a page with just content or do you have auction links on there two. Do you find it difficult to get people to go to your pages with the auction items from your home page?
I read your posts on BANS and got a lot of good information.
Could a person put the Bans site on a page of your blog so you would get credit for the new posts from the blog.
Thanks for the help,
Andy

@Andy@mlm network marketing leads,
No I have content pages separate from auction pages which are actual store pages, those content pages are guides and stuff related to the store products. But, I do have content on some of the auction pages just above the auction listings, as in my example site I list in the BANS post. It is always good to have some written content above auction listing on those store pages.
See BANS is set up to automatically upload store pages for products that you choose and then you can add content to them as you wish and then the content pages you create manually manually with the builder inside BANS.
You can connect a BANS to a blog and this is one strategy that is really working for people’s rankings.
I had (have) the exact SAME problem. I only had 3 auctions listed on my home page but I just removed them. I rank really well in Yahoo and MSN, got to #4 in in G then disappeared so hopefully by removing the auctions on the home page this will help.
One question for you, do you cloak your affiliate links?
Thanks for the great post.

@Virginia,
I do not cloak my affiliate links. I know some do, but there are issues with doing that, such as cookie loss, and SE infractions, and it’s against some affiliate program TOS, and so I just left them as they are within the BANS source codes.
Do you cloak?
By the way, check out my 6 Step Checklist for On-Site SEO to make sure your BANS is optimized from all possible angles.
I didn’t cloak but I changed it about a month or two ago when I notice my competition who’s site ranks #1 in G, cloaks his links. So, I thought I’d give it a shot. Haven’t noticed any difference but could just be me. I’m sure results will vary depending on the site. I can’t figure google out. I’ll check out your checklist. thanks

@JR, Yes I will.
I shouldn’t say I haven’t noticed any difference with cloaking – I have had more income but I’ve been doing other things too such as focusing on more backlinks. I had a look at your seo checklist, it’s a good list
I already do all of those things so hopefully I’ll start ranking better. There’s a lot of competition in my niche but for good reason

Great advice as usual! Just one more testimony that you can never take your top rank for granted with Google. They’re always changing so we need to continue to test and change things, too. That’s what makes it so much fun, right? Thanks!

hi JR,
Thank you. You are in the 1%.
What do I mean by 1%? What I mean is that 99% of the “experts” will say do this or do that to rank better in Google, but don’t provide any proof that their advice works. Only about 1% of the experts do experiments to find out what actually works, and then explain the experiments. I think there is a lot to be learned in your experiment, and I hope you will do more and write about them.

hi JR,
I hope you do conduct some more experiments! I find that when it comes to SEO, there is way too much “conventional wisdom” and far too little “proof by experiment”. That said, as you point out in your post, google is “unpredictable” at best, and what works one month might not work the next. All the more reason to test ones ideas, and then keep testing them. ~ Steve, aka “portable trade show displays”
PS. Thanks for replying to my comment. Another indication that you are unique from the majority bloggers

You are very welcome and thank you for commenting! I love interacting with commenters, I think it’s one of the best parts of blogging. I know, so many bloggers respond to no comments, or even worse only the first 2 or 3, yuck!
And you are totally right about SEO, testing is always key, things can easily change quickly and if you don’t keep up, you can get left behind.
Well, I’m back after being away from the computer for 4 days, just checked my stats and guess what? after removing the auctions from my home page I jumped up to #5 in Google for my targeted keyword phrase. I can’t believe it. I’ve been meaning to change my front page for over a month now anyway but J.R., your post here motivated me to just do it. Thank you!

@JR, most are in my opinion, but you may try the scratchback widget; at least the tipper gets a site-wide link. I’m doing ok with mine and thinkin’ you might do quite well with one.

I know, the plugin will not allow any different placement, I am going to try to tweak it today.
I add content to my blog 3 or 4 times per week and i think this keeps Google off my back, by implementing a link building strategy and adding content often my site has been ranking well in Google.
