Sorry that you had the issues JR. I have gone through this with pictures I have posted being lifted and used on other peoples new jersey real estate websites. they think that just because they are on the internet that they are free. One Realtor even went so far as to make me go to her broker with the high res versions of the pictures before she took them down.

Funny thing is that if she had just been nice and asked for permission to use the pictures, I would have let her. Well I would have asked for a text link back to me but that is it.

First off, thank you very much for this well written and thorough post. I'm glad to see more Webmasters and bloggers taking up this issue so well.

I would definitely encourage you to check out a few services though, one is Copy Alerts (copyalerts.com) and MyFreeCopyright (myfreecopyright.com). Both provide great free services, the first in detection and the second in non-repudiation.

thank you again for this post and I hope it helps others!

This is a great post JR and one that i will bookmark. Content theft happens all the time and is hard to detect at times, but it can be helpful if you deep link like Anthony suggested.

In spite of copyright infringement notices I believe this will still happen. It is a shame to see original content getting used by others without credit given to the author. It is one of the downsides to the ability to instantly publish your own writings on the internet.

lol. This happens all the time to me. I don't care if people steal my content anymore. I usually put deep links within all my posts - and these get copied as well. So I end up building backlinks. I don't think Google cares eaither because it doesn't seem to hurt my PR

I know, it's a total pain, but it's a necessary pain, at least those WP plugins make it easier, at least for blogs anyway.

This has happened to me also - blog ripoffs, article ripoffs, even forum post ripoffs. It's a shame that some are too lazy to contribute an original thought. Even paraphrasing is better than outright plagiarism. It's hard enough to write good original content without having to go to the trouble of protecting it from a copycat.

hey JR,
I'm usually against profanity but in this case it is completely appropriate. I also think waterboarding might not be so bad for these a-holes. Glad to hear this one clown removed the copied stuff after you contacted him, but I'm sure he's ripping off other people. Anyway, thanks for letting me join your rant. I've had some stuff scraped and copied too, and it pisses me off big time! And that's just the stuff I'm aware of... arghhh.
