You are totally right, while Google claims that they know who the original author is, that is not always the case.

Content Scrappers can afect you worst then you think.

It can cause google to penalize you. You drop so low in google’s index, that nobody can find you.

It happened to me. Thing is if too many people are scraping you, it can take forever to notify them to stop. Then a new one pops up and duplicates you web page. And you have to do it all over again.

GREAT INFORMATION! I use Copyscape with strong words warning others about stealing my content. I have used Google Alerts in the past to keep an eye on my favorite keywords but I never thought to use it to keep up with backlinks to my site. However, after reading this post, I am concerned about one marketing technique that I use, Article Marketing. What are your thoughts on that? I will write a article and post it on my blog. After a few weeks have past, I will post an article on one of my favorite article directories. Do you think this is a good idea or bad one?

Sorry that you had the issues JR. I have gone through this with pictures I have posted being lifted and used on other peoples new jersey real estate websites. they think that just because they are on the internet that they are free. One Realtor even went so far as to make me go to her broker with the high res versions of the pictures before she took them down.

Funny thing is that if she had just been nice and asked for permission to use the pictures, I would have let her. Well I would have asked for a text link back to me but that is it.

I would definitely encourage you to check out a few services though, one is Copy Alerts (copyalerts.com) and MyFreeCopyright (myfreecopyright.com). Both provide great free services, the first in detection and the second in non-repudiation.
