Some fool stole several of my posts and reprinted them on his blog. It started with one post and then daily I was noticing he was adding one after the other of my posts on his blog, a total copyright infringement.
The most comical part of this was the fact that his blog is called #1 SEO Consultant, HAH! What a crock!!!!! Any good SEO knows that scrapping content is a lame move, I guess he does not know enough about SEO to write his own guides so he scraps website content from others.
I sent him this email:
This is to advise you that you are using copyrighted and protected material on your website/blog. Your illegal use of the following posts on your site:
List of Stolen Posts URL’s on His Site
at his url is originally from my blog called JR’s Internet Marketing Strategies at http://getinternetmarketingstrategies.com. This is original content and I am the author and copyright holder.Use of copyright protected material without permission is illegal under copyright laws, and copyright infringement. Please remove the plagiarized material immediately. I expect a response within 3 days to this issue. Thank you for your immediate action on this matter.
He responded within 3 hours telling me all my content would be removed and he apologized for the inconvenience.
This unfortunately happens time and again. Losers that cannot write their own content will scrap yours and create what are called splogs, blogs full of scrapped content,
as well as using it on their websites.
This thief was using a plugin developed by some other dick that actually lets you scrape feeds from other blogs and automatically insert them into your blog, feed theft is rampant on the net and considered copyright infringement. So if you publish a full feed then your whole post just gets injected into any scraper that uses this plug-in.
Some bloggers will republish excerpts of posts with a link back to the original source to continue reading the story and I am okay with this. But to scrape the entire post and republish it can harm the original author’s site.
Two Schools of Thought on Content Theft
Some feel it’s fine as long as their links are retained within the content and they look at it as getting more backlinks. But, many do not feel that way, and there are harmful effects, especially in cases like mine, where there were several full feed posts stolen and it appeared as if he was the author.
Some Harmful Effects of Content Theft
Content theft on the Internet is copyright infringement and just as illegal as violating US copyright laws and we all need to be active in putting a stop to it, if we are passive about it, it only encourages more scrappers to continue stealing our stuff.
Basically how you allow your word to be used is upto you, but be sure to make it clear on your websites and blogs.
1. Website Copyright Protection:

2. Wordpress Plugins for Copyright Displays
Display Copyright on the Blog1. Blogs- Watch your trackbacks and Incoming Links. Another reason
besides SEO to use internal links on your posts. If the thief left any of your internal links intact within the stolen post, Wordpress will send a trackback to your blog, you can find these in your Wordpress admin: in comments, on the dashboard – incoming links and often in your spam folder, via a plugin like Akismet Comment SPAM Fighter, which I hope all of you have.
2. Websites and Blogs – Use Google Alerts that will notify you whenever your links or your desired search terms show up on the web. Learn more at my post: Google Alerts a Must Have Tool
3. Websites and Blogs – Use Copyscape – Enter your url and they will scan the web to look for duplicates of your content. Free version is very limited.
4. Search the search engines – This is the hard way, but can work, just enter you web page title in the format: allintitle:”your title”
5. Wordpress Plugins to Identify and Prevent Content Theft
Finding the Contact Info of the Thief
First look to these sources for website owners name and contact information on their site:
If none of above exist use these resources to find contact info.
1. Send Email. Send a firm but polite email to the thief and demand to remove the stolen content and CC their host, like the email I sent above, you can copy it and just insert your information.
2. Contact Their Host. If they do not respond, contact their hosting provider directly and notify them of the copyright violation. Many hosts will close those accounts or work with you to resolve the issues.
3. Cease and Desist. The above usually does the trick, but if you still do not get a response you can start a Cease and Desist Order, that is more official and threatening.
Here are the best sources to learn more about Cease and Desist
4. Contact the Search Engines. This is the ultimate step and as per the Digital Millineum Copyright Act, compels search engines and online service providers to work for you to stop the copyright infringement and violation.

This is great information- I had that happen to a blog that I write for someone else and it really does make you mad when you come across information that you wrote in someone elses name.
I had no idea what to do except send an email- and this guy did not acknowledge nor take it off. Now I know the steps I need to follow- thanks

I know it’s such a pisser, especially more than one post. Glad you found it useful!
What is you thought on links to other articles. while I have never reposted a post without permission, if I do come across an informative article that my readers will find interesting, I will usually copy the headline and maybe a sentence or two if I feel it’s necessary, and a link to the original post.

but sometimes they actually do.
That is totally fine, As long as you lead the person to the original source. This route also is a good way to get backlinks when it’s done for you, except they often do not use your anchor text
Jr, You know those people piss me off so bad. Like bloggers do not spend enough time writing their own content. I best he is the #1 SEO guy huh. Maybe he needs to spend some time learning the ropes of the net before he tries to consult anyone on SEO.

LOL, nothing seems to be too easy when working online.
I decided to go with a partial feed on my new MMO flagship blog, which is what I do on my niche blogs too. MMO and Internet Marketing blogs tend to get scrapped more than most others. iPod/IPhone posts/blogs are also popular with scrappers.
One thing that does help you get scrapped, especially partial feed scrapped, is using a lot of ping services and RSS feed aggregators. As you said though, a partial scrape is usually OK.

Hi Frank. I used to have a partial feed but I had read quite a bit from bloggers and blog readers that say partial feeds can eliminate subscribers since many won’t subscribe if you offer a partial only. Once I made it a full feed I had an increase in readers, though impossible to determine if that had a big hand in it since so many other factors exist. I like those plugins though, at least the credit is there back to me at the bottom of the feed now.

Thanks so much for the info. Even though I’m sorry this happened to you, it’s kind of a blessing in disguise for me. I’ve been lazy about protecting myself in regard to copyright issues and now I have step by step instructions, thanks to you.
I’d like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt….maybe he didn’t know that the plugin was designed to steal content? That’s what it would appear to be since he was so quick to make the corrections.

JR,
Sorry to here about your problems. I know it is no consolation but at least it shows you are putting out quality content (your readers already knew that).
Thanks for all the resources regarding copyrights, I didn’t know about those options.

LOL @ powered by the scrapping plugin.
I get trackbacks with EVERY post I put up from the same splogs, and within seconds too. I guess you’re right that snippets don’t matter as much…except those ones that say, “Unknown recently wrote….” irk me more.
I advise everyone though, even if the snippet scrapes don’t bother you, delete the TB. You don’t want to give them a backlink also.
This is awesome, and I’ll have to read it again for sure lol; thanks for all the links!

Content grabbing happens all the time. Catching the thieves have become more challenging and daunting task with the exponential growth of websites. The RSS plugin is the best way to fight this violation. And you get the credit your site deserves.

Is CopyScape similar to a visible copyright notice? Sorry if that was in the post, but I couldn’t see it

Yes, they give you a widget to put on your site, but it’s more than that, I think they use some kind of technology to actually prevent the copy itself, or maybe a watermark, I am not sure, I have not used their paid service. You can learn more by visiting their site.
@JR, hey, thanks for your reply
I will of course look more into it, but it’s best just to have some background knowledge before I go putting money into it
Hi Jr.,
My name is Yvette and I didn’t know that it was possible to use others blogs on your own website. I am new to the “game” and I was just reading around to get some tips and came across Your blog. Please forgive the next question but I not sure I understood your blog. How did you come across your work on this person’s website? were you notify? Or you just happen upon it?
And thanks for the advice on how to avoid getting your work stolen. I will look into it as soon as I get my website going! Yvette Pinn

I came across the stolen content because when he added it to his blog it had my links in it and my blog notified me via what is called a trackback, which is just Wordpress blog’s way of notifying my blog that another site has linked to me.
The trackback tells me where my link is and when I go there I can see what was written and that is how I found all my posts on this guys site.
Now trackback only works with blogs, this function does not exist in static websites, but if you look at my post again I do give some ways to detect stolen content for websites it’s under the paragraph titled: How to Monitor and Identify Theft.
Hope this helps.
I had just always assumed it wasn’t worth the effort to fight back. Glad to learn that it’s WORTH the effort of fighting back because it IS possible to win!!!

What do you mean?
Well, it happened to me on numerous occasions. In fact, it’s quite often. I was mad in the beginning but I’ve learned to deal with it over time. As long as mine ranks higher than them, I care less about it. No matter what you do, the scrapers will still be jolly well plagiarize your contents.
Anyway, isn’t it plagiarism is the highest form of flattery? That’s another way of looking at internet parasites. It does make you feel better. LOL. Oh, what a comprehensive writeup on the subject. Good job, JR.

hey JR,
I’m usually against profanity but in this case it is completely appropriate. I also think waterboarding might not be so bad for these a-holes. Glad to hear this one clown removed the copied stuff after you contacted him, but I’m sure he’s ripping off other people. Anyway, thanks for letting me join your rant. I’ve had some stuff scraped and copied too, and it pisses me off big time! And that’s just the stuff I’m aware of… arghhh.

It is a total pisser, I have taken steps to protect myself with a couple of those plugins.
This has happened to me also – blog ripoffs, article ripoffs, even forum post ripoffs. It’s a shame that some are too lazy to contribute an original thought. Even paraphrasing is better than outright plagiarism. It’s hard enough to write good original content without having to go to the trouble of protecting it from a copycat.

lol. This happens all the time to me. I don’t care if people steal my content anymore. I usually put deep links within all my posts – and these get copied as well. So I end up building backlinks. I don’t think Google cares eaither because it doesn’t seem to hurt my PR

I hear ya, and I too always put lots of links within my posts.
Looks like he is syndicating your RSS feed you can block him from accessing the feed.
I remember reading something about this in FeedForAll’s forum http://www.feedforall.com/forum I can’t find the post now though. Sorry!
In spite of copyright infringement notices I believe this will still happen. It is a shame to see original content getting used by others without credit given to the author. It is one of the downsides to the ability to instantly publish your own writings on the internet.

This is a great post JR and one that i will bookmark. Content theft happens all the time and is hard to detect at times, but it can be helpful if you deep link like Anthony suggested.

Sorry that you had the issues JR. I have gone through this with pictures I have posted being lifted and used on other peoples new jersey real estate websites. they think that just because they are on the internet that they are free. One Realtor even went so far as to make me go to her broker with the high res versions of the pictures before she took them down.
Funny thing is that if she had just been nice and asked for permission to use the pictures, I would have let her. Well I would have asked for a text link back to me but that is it.
