Last week I sat down to do some link building and write two articles. Unfortunately for me I started reading email and then I got all caught up in it and the emails and that led to other useless stupidity and before I knew it 3 & 1/2 hours had passed, wasted on sheer and utter stupidity!!

I know this has happened to you guys as well so don’t even try to deny it!
It is important to address time management when working at home because we need to have a lot more discipline than working for a boss. When working at home with, I hope legitimate work from home jobs, we have the freedom to choose what we do, when we work and there is no one to answer to but our selves.
Also, I am sure that many of you have full time jobs, kids and spouses that allow only a limited amount of time for Internet marketing and building your online business and so the time you do have is just that much more precious.
So, after I lost those 3 hours and I knew that I have done this before, I decided to implement a better plan.
Working at Home Time and Task Management Plan:
1. Everyday write down a list of tasks that must be completed the following day. Be realistic and make sure these can all be completed in the time available.
2. Don’t put to many complicated brain draining activities on the same list. Like, Tuesday: write 5 articles and 1 blog post, this is too much of the same thing.
Try to mix the more creative and exhausting tasks with easier more technical tasks, like link building and article writing, blog post and link building, directory submissions and forum posting, website content and keyword research, etc…
3. Have the list sitting where it will slap you in the face as you sit down at your work station.
4. Work first on those tasks and nothing else until they are done. No email or other distracting activities!
5. Commit to beat yourself senseless unless you stick to the plan!
I have been doing this since last week and I cannot believe how much more productive and efficient I am. Also, I find that my work has improved because I am doing these important tasks FIRST when I am fresh and clear!
My articles are better and easier to write and I was able to add some good content to one of my websites after weeks of promising myself that I would while spending hours on inane activities. And, after I am done with those tasks then I can spend as long as I want on email and whatever without any guilt!
What do you guys think? How do manage your time? What tips do you have to be more efficient and productive when working at home?

I am bad at setting schedules (work does that for me pretty fine). So for my blog I complete tasks when I am in a mood to.
But for really big chunks I usually dedicate some time and drop everything else for few hours. I was up till 4am last night fixing two dozens things that were suggested to me in blog critique.
Made scary post about it as well.
I shiver at thought that I have twice that to tweak for SEO.
Rarsts last blog post..Why you should stick to expensive USB flash drives
Hey Rarst,
I am the same way, and I too only like to do things I am in the mood for, in that way I am flexible with my scheduling, as long as I at least accomplish something constructive.
Hey, don’t beat yourself up over a little “diversion” time….
Here’s a good example of how you can waste time AND build links: during American Idol season, I spend a lot of time at “Vote For The Worst (dot) Com”…….a site that makes fun of Idol & the idiotic contestants.
Fortunately for me, VFTW is a blog site also, that has some “Do Follow” in some of the places that you post there. VFTW is a PR 6 site, and its subject is Music, Karaoke, and Entertainment. Interesting how Google likes the synergy with MY site (which has Music, Karaoke & Entertainment in its content & metas).
A good example of how ‘wasted time’ can turn productive, without any guilt about the time wasted! (I now have hundreds of links accumulated from Vote For The Worst)
Okay Matt, now I am going to beat you senseless why have you not told us about this before? Sounds like a great site and I have been looking for music links, going over there now to “waste some time”

Been there, done that! I have a week at a time calendar that I keep near my computer. I list all the things I want to do and then carry forward what doesn’t get done. It has a place for notes on the side so it’s quite useful and handy.
There are still days where I do nothing but email and fun stuff but I try to keep those days to a minimum. Like today.

Yes, I have trouble staying away from my email too. The way I handle the distraction is to use the two-minute rule. If I cannot act on the message in two minutes or less, I simply forward it to my GTD (Getting Things Done) system. Then I will handle it later when I do a review of my GTD inbox.
I’ve written several posts about my experiences with GTD on my blog at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/how-to-gtd/ John

Thanks for the tips John.
I find myself doing the same thing, but I think for me, it’s fear holding me back – fear of all the things I need to know to build my affiliate business and of not having the time to do everything – so I do nothing. For a while, I can convince myself that I’m doing necessary work-related research, but then I have to finally admit I’m just looking for something else to occupy my mind so I can put off working on my sites! I am going to try your idea of writing down a list of tasks. I think once I accomplish something, it’ll motivate me to do more. Thanks for an excellent post.

Hello Bunny and Welcome!
I know exactly what you’re talking about, and this is often the predicament that many go through when starting out in this business. I was an information junkie at one point and I had realized that I had to make a move and take action and once I did it not only motivated me to do more but there is nothing like the hands on experience in this business to propel you further and further. Sometimes when overwhelmed it helps to take it step-by-step and only focus on what you need to do that day.

Time management was the main issue this week, I saw a lot of posts around the bloggosphere about time management. It surely is an important issue and being consistent is key. I have troubles following a particular schedule so I don’t really have one, but I’m getting very good at focusing really on what’s important when working online! Everybody has its own way, as long as it works

This is what I’m pretty good at – failing to prioritize and ending up doing the unnecessary first while neglecting the other priorities. I’m not a good planner either and I’m having a hard time trying to stick to a schedule but I’m improving each day and your article kinda serves as a good reminder.

Hi Yan,
, much easier to click around email than to write 300 words about some techie crap!
I know me too, I am basically a very disorganized person, and doing the unnecessary is usually seems so much easier and sometimes funner than the necessary
JR, time management is among the most important things about working at home. I’ve been an at home freelancer for about 15 years off and on. It’s critical to make sure that you break your time into segments and follow a routine … otherwise it’s just bad noews.
great post, JR, and reminder for me to focus on important things. Another wasteful activity, I used to be engage in, was login in and checking my affiliate accounts almost every day. Once or even twice a week is good enough to take a look at stats and sales.
Max@Viliat-Blogs last blog post..How To Build Blog Making $100+ a Month on Autopilot Under 3 Weeks – Part 1
Hi Max,
Thanks and welcome. LOL…that checking affiliate accounts has to be the number one distraction for AM’ers. I also notice that when I do that too much, and there are no new commissions from hour to hour, I get irritated and that is a distraction too, I totally agree once or twice a week is best.
One more tip to add:
Lock your door to stop your friends coming around when they have the day off work because they know you will be in lol!!!
Hi Chris, LOL, good tip!! Sorry all the comments you left went to SPAM for some reason, I just fished them all out and restored them, welcome and I hope to interact with you more often.
Hi JR,
Thanks for that, I got flagged for spam on another blog I was posting on the other day, no idea why! Great Blog, keep up the good work!
I see two possible reasons for the flagging…
1. According to my email, you posted a lotta comments pretty much at the same time…this can do it.
2. Check with your ISP – if it’s been flagged at the base, you could be in trouble.

Hi Chris, thanks and Dennis is right most likely it is because you added lots of comments quickly that has happened to me before.
Some good tips here, I may try them next time I work from home as I am very guilty of wasting time now and again. When I have trouble focusing I usually write down all the tasks I want to get done on a whiteboard and cross them off as I get through them. It gives you focus and also a sense of achievement because you can see yourself moving forward.
