I know that there are several coupon sites that are very successful and one of which makes quite a bit of money as he dominates the SERPS and there is a lot of user generated content there from members interacting and adding coupons. I would imagine that the coupon niche is quite competitive and it might take some time to rank, but other than that, I don’t see it as not being viable. As far as business directories, again competitive, and I suspect that you would have to become quite popular and authoritative in order to have good Google SERPS, as there are so many out there all ready as well as choosing your keywords wisely.

Are you familiar with the directory site model as a money making website? I am considering a business directory, event, news, classifieds, coupons, type community site…based on small fees for the premium directory listings and advertising and some affiliate marketing promotion throught the site. It is very difficult to find Internet Marketing related material on this topic. Is that because it just doesn’t pay, is more work than the typical affiliate site (thin) or am I just missing something somewhere.

Try promoting on directories for something like “food nutrition” and it’s a different story – there will be few to no pages in the directory for that theme, and getting a backlink from there will be less effective.
