Do you still consider article submission to be as valuable a link building activity as say, writing for your own outside indepenent wordpress blog?

My outside blog for example is a PR3 blog, with a number of the older posts being PR1′s and PR2′s

Yes you can, but not all the time, basically if you always use articles from directories on your blog you will have what is called a scraped content sites, variety of your own and other articles is better. Your blog will essentially be competing with all the other article directories that have used that article and many of them are high PR. Better to buy PLR and then rewrite it as your own.

@ Austin Well, I use Article Marketer a service that submits my articles for me, saves me TONS of time and submits to over 5,000 sites, so my motto is, the more article sites you submit to the better. The ones I mention in this post are those that are great for the viral effect, but primarily for backlinks, Article Marketer is the service of choice. It costs but very little for the time saver and the amount of exposure. Google rarely updates their link stats, so what their results show are not accurate, they are there and counted, just don't show up in results. The best way to check backlinks is through your Yahoo Site Explorer account or with this Free Backlink Checker

What are your thoughts on submitting to many sites? I submit my articles to about 150 sites, but generally only see about 50 backlinks in google from all the effort.

In addition to submitting to other people’s article directories, you can also create your own Article Dashboard site. The Article Dashboard script is free, although it’s not supported well.

This method can be useful since you will certainly approve your own articles with whatever links you want in the content. If these are picked up by sites that republish content from other sites this can be even more effective. I recommend using a 8 year old plus pre-owned domain for this because this will help you overcome some, but not all, duplicate content filtering.
