While links are still very important, how and where you get them from is what makes all the difference. Anchor text that directly matches the title which directly matches the h1, h2, alt tags and page url may provide very little benefit unless the site has authority status in which case they are probably still counted. With new websites you better get started building a very natural link profile before you go to nuts with the anchor text.

@ social media
Well if you constantly use the same anchor text then yes you run the risk of losing SERP ranks and getting a penalty, the key to good link building is that it is natural, and when you have tons of links all with the same anchors it looks artificial, links that you have built, not those that were given to you naturally and freely by other sites,

Do you mean my site may be banned from the search enginees if there are too many anchor texts leading to my site? I have a lot, and nothing happened...yet... will it?

I find that writing and submitting articles, commenting on related blogs and posting in forums (using keywords as text links) works extremely well for me. In fact, this is basically all I do to increase my search engine ranking, and I have one site #1 on Google, another site #18 for an extremely competitive keyword that lists over 700,000,000 results. Link building may not be much fun, but it sure is effective! Great post

Great way of explaining back linking and anchor text in laymen s terms. This will help me when i am explaining what I do to my family. I can't tell you how many times I have tried doing this with nothing but blank stares afterwards.

I have to admit that I've made the mistake of not using the anchor text correctly. I've sometimes chosen phrases like "Buy Now", "Act Now", etc. to get people to click, when I should be using the keyword phrases. Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to make smarter choices going forward.

Anchor text for inbound links is one of the most important factors in search engine optimization. Anchor text always represent theme of your site, its enhances the relevance of the targeted Page. Anchor text usually gives your visitors useful information about the content of the page you're linking to. What the link says tells users and the SE what your page is about.

Yes, i think that the single most important thing in the whole SEO is the number of backlinks with the anchor text as your keyword. If for a given keyword you have a higher number of backlinks then you will win the game. Ofcourse, the PR of the backlink and the related websites are also important.

@Jim
The SE's read all the words in the anchor, so Jim @ Morristown.. and Morristown... is okay because it includes your keywords. Plus, it varies your anchor so your linking looks more natural, if a site has 5,000 backlinks with the exact same anchor then it looks very forced, and link building should look natural, make sense?

I personally try to get more of the precise anchors like Morristown... than any other, when possible, but I also have a fair amount of JR@ and JR from and others like Internet Marketing Guides.

The good thing about the Name @ KW is that it will never be a search term so no way for Google to mistake it for a different KW you are targeting, but sometimes you can accidentally wind up targeting a different KW that people do search for, like Internet Marketing Guides, but overall Google gets a lot form your on-site SEO and if it's done right will be able to tell what KW you are targeting so the variations in anchors is okay.
