The Importance Of Anchor Text In Backlinks

Backlinks = SERPS and Higher Page Rank
One big component of Internet Marketing is Search Engine Opimization (SEO), which is basically optimizing your website to rank in natural search engine results with both on-site and off-site techniques, and a big part of Off-Site Search Engine Optimization is an effective link building campaign.
Backlinks to your site from relevant quality sites are essential for Page Rank (Google invented way to rank authority of websites, ranges from 0-10, 10 being highest) and Search Engine Page Results (SERPS). The more backlinks you have the higher you will climb in SERPS and the higher your Page Rank will be.
Backlink Anchor Text:
Anchor text is the words visible in the hyperlink of your backlink.
Here is HTML code to backlinks with anchor text:
<a href=”http://yourdomaindotcom”> KEYWORDS = ANCHOR TEXT</a>
The anchor text you choose in your link building efforts is crucial because this gives Google (and all search engines) relevancy for your websites.
The “rule of relevancy” is where the anchor text gives Google relevance for your site for respective keywords and associates your sites with those keywords and the more backlinks you have with those keywords in the anchor the higher in SERPS you will climb.
So basically the way to rank in SERPS for your keywords is to use them in your anchor text.
For example, if I want my website to show up in search engine results for the KW “cheap laptop computers” I will put that as my anchor text when I build links.
This anchor text method should be used in all your link building efforts and for all the KW that you want to rank for.
Just make sure to vary the anchor text in different links by adding other words so the linking looks more natural. For example, Buy Cheap Laptop Computers, Joe’s Cheap Laptop Computers, Cheap Laptop Computers for Sale etc…

If we link to one of our internal pages with anchor text say “Search Engine Optimization” and if we put the same word in title and heading of the page we are linking ,do we have much additional benefit?
JR reply on July 18th, 2008 8:13 pm:
@ Ram
Yes, this is how it should be done. If subpage KW is Search Engine Optimization, then this KW should be in the title header of the page, and about 5% density throughout the page and used as the anchor when building links back to that page.

Another thing to remember is that varied anchor text is best. Having lots of the same text pointing to your site looks suspicious so use related terms as well. This looks more natural to the search engines and will help you rank better overall.

Hi JR,
Yes everyone who wants to rank high in SERP must have a link building strategy and follow it consistently. Good to have a simple schedule drawn up or in your mind. I know of one SEO expert who spends 4 hrs SEO work daily.

The anchor text is still very important, especially when you vary the keywords and use Keyword Modifiers.
I do think Google will change their policy towards anchor text links, since 99% of them are created by the webmaster/seo guy and that’s not what Google wants.
So if anchor text backlinks loose value in the future, what’s the next step…?

Well, I do not foresee them changing this, in fact Page Rank is their creation, all based on quality links with anchor text. Also, there is the on-site relevancy to kw that still plays a big role. I guess if there are changes in the future, we will just have to roll with the punches. But so far so good.

This is true quality backlinks from related niche is one reason to get your SERPS ranking higher especially if you are using anchor text to it. I’m giving enough effort doing this for some of my keywords for months and recently I’m on G’s second page already. Way to go. Thanks for always posting valuable information, JR. Keep on keeping on.

One thing I have been wondering is, say your main keyword is morristown nj real estate, but you cannot use that in a few places, is there much benefit to using the anchor text of Jim in Morristown NJ in those places where you cannot use full anchor text? Otherwise I would just use my name but that is no as much help.
JR reply on March 14th, 2009 12:45 pm:
@Jim
The SE’s read all the words in the anchor, so Jim @ Morristown.. and Morristown… is okay because it includes your keywords. Plus, it varies your anchor so your linking looks more natural, if a site has 5,000 backlinks with the exact same anchor then it looks very forced, and link building should look natural, make sense?
I personally try to get more of the precise anchors like Morristown… than any other, when possible, but I also have a fair amount of JR@ and JR from and others like Internet Marketing Guides.
The good thing about the Name @ KW is that it will never be a search term so no way for Google to mistake it for a different KW you are targeting, but sometimes you can accidentally wind up targeting a different KW that people do search for, like Internet Marketing Guides, but overall Google gets a lot form your on-site SEO and if it’s done right will be able to tell what KW you are targeting so the variations in anchors is okay.
